5 Apartment Types Not To Rent To Avoid Issues With Mold

As a renter, it's important to protect your health when moving into a new apartment. Mold is a common problem that renters deal with because of the building's history. For this reason, it's important to know what to look for in an apartment to ensure that the risk of your apartment becoming mold infected is limited. Here are five apartment types to avoid:

  1. A Basement Apartment: Basement apartments should definitely be avoided since basements often have the highest moisture buildup. Even though ventilation in these apartment types may be good, it's still best to avoid, especially if you live with more than one person or if you cook often, which also leads to heavy moisture buildup in the air. 
  2. An Apartment With a History of Flooding in the Basement: If you are looking at an apartment with a basement, you should ask the landlord about any flooding history. If these has been a flood in the basement in the past, it can be problematic to your health. This is because mold spores most likely grew on the vents that lead to the HVAC systems connected to the units in the building. This means the air will be contaminated and can lead to problems with your health. 
  3. An Apartment With No Ventilation Fans: All apartments should have ventilation fans in the bathroom and the kitchen. If there are none, then there is probably already heavy moisture built up in the air from previous tenants. Plus, the chances of you dealing with mold problems in your unit in the future is much higher, especially if you cook often and shower daily. 
  4. An Apartment With Old Carpets: The best way to avoid mold problems is to rent an apartment that doesn't have carpet. However, if you must rent an apartment with carpeting, be sure to ask how old the carpeting in your unit is. If it's older than 7 years, ask the landlord if it can be replaced before you move in. You never know if there could be moisture trapped underneath the carpet that can contain mold growth. Besides, this is how often a landlord should be replacing the carpeting in their units anyway. 
  5. An Apartment With a History of Roof Leaks: If the apartment you are renting has a history of roof leaks, then the building is most likely contaminated with mold spores. This is going to lead to contaminated air in the units. Ask your landlord about the roofing history to ensure that this is not the case.
